Tunesday Tuesday - Tanya Donelly

Another artist I have liked since I was a teenager is Tanya Donelly. You might remember her from her bands Throwing Muses and Belly in the 1990's. I have always liked Tanya's voice and her lyrics; they remind me of poetry and zines. As of this post, Tanya is revising her website, but she did have demos for Star as downloads at one point - they were so good! It was neat to hear the songs from Star at such a raw and early stage.

Here is my absolute favorite Tanya song, and she looks so cute in this video, too. This is the first Throwing Muses song I ever heard. My pen pal put it on a mix tape for me.

Tunesday Tuesday - Calvin Johnson

First off, I love K Records! K is my favorite indie record label. It has been since I was in high school. So there is no question that I am a fan of Calvin Johnson, founder and musician of K Records. He is most well known for Beat Happening, but also bands like Dub Narcotic Sound System, Halo Benders, the Hive Dwellers, and his solo records, too. Why do I love Calvin and K records so much? I think it is cos their mission statement reads "K explodes the teenage underground into passionate revolt against the corporate ogre world-wide."


Over the years I have seen many live shows that feature Calvin, one of the most memorable was one for the Paper Opera tour, where my friend and I ended up at a cook out with the show attendees. We all had tofu pups, played dominos, and got caught in a thundershower after the Paper Opera. It was amazing and strange at the same time.


Calvin is a great dancer. I love watching him "shake a puddin'" when he performs with Dub Narcotic. Here he is dancing at a show from about 2000 or so.






I love Calvin solo cos he still dances, but he has the best voice. Here he is at the Warhol Museum, 2005.






Another favorite Calvin show was the one here in Athens that was at a local park and baseball field. This show started at 11am, so it was fun to get up early on a summer Saturday and see some music! We had a great time, and watched some kickball that happened that day, too.

Tunesday Tuesday - Guv'ner

One of my all-time favorite bands on Merge Records is Guv'ner. I first heard the song "Baby's Way Cruel" on a mix tape from my pen pal. I was hooked upon first listen. I had a hard time finding their album "Hard for Measy for You," but I ended up finding it via Parasol Mailorder. Woah - remember Parasol? I do! Okay, so Guv'ner are husband and wife musical act, Charles and Pumpkin. They are really amazing and adorable and cute and when they play you can tell they are having fun and singing to each other, too. I saw them perform in 1996. It was my first 21 and over show! They were super fun and I gave Pumpkin lollipops and my zines at the show - how nerdy! Anyways, here are some of my pictures from that show. I miss Guv'ner! I love that band.

Tunesday Tuesday - Basia Bulat

I have liked musician Basia Bulat for a while now. I think I read about her online first, then I picked up her albums. I love her voice and I know she is more on the side of "folk" but that is what I love about her. Raoul always calls me a "folkie" but I don't totally agree with that. ha ha. I imagine Basia to be playing her music for a kitty in a woodland setting on a spring cloudy day! Basia's videos are really cute, so let's have a look!

Tunesday Tuesday - the Spinanes

One of my favorite bands from the 1990's is the Spinanes. I love the Spinanes! I was hooked from the first time I heard their song "Noel, Jonah, and Me." I went out and bought their album (on cassette!) and what a great one it is! I still listen to all of their albums, and I know it sounds cheesy, but I love all their albums. I love all of their albums, but in different ways. I don't know about you, but I can remember what the season was like when I first purchase and get into an album. Manos is winter that is thawing into spring. Strand for me is dusk in the springtime. Arches and Aisles is autumn leaves for me. Make sense? Anyways, the Spinanes are a great band that I still love to this day.

Tunesday Tuesday - Dean and Britta

Over the weekend Raoul and I went to see Dean and Britta perform their score to 13 Most Beautiful, a collection of their favorite Screen Tests by artist Andy Warhol. We were excited to finally see this performance, after missing it in Savannah a few years back. I have not seen Dean and Britta play in a while, so that was really nice, too! So in honor of this special Warhol love-fest, I will share my most favorite photos I took from that evening.
